Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas, when God is made flesh through His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Messiah, the one who God's people have long been awaiting. It is through the season of advent that the Church awaits with joy the coming of Christ to the world and looks forward to the second coming.
The first two weeks of Advent are celebrated with the color purple, as a time of penance, prayer and preparation. The third Sunday of advent, "Gaudete" is celebrated with the color Rose as the Church soon enters into the Christmas season.
Christmas is the day the Church celebrates the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus Christ brings to fulfilment the promises of God to His people. The birth of Christ reminds the faithful of God's presence among us through the gift of His son. Just as Mary and Joseph protected the Infant Jesus, so too, we are reminded to protect the presence of Christ in our lives as the greatest gift.
The Christmas celebration begins on the Christmas Eve Vigil and continues through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
