Statement By Bishop Stephen Blaire on Immigration Reform
The Bishops of California speak out on the need for immigration reform and for the pastoral care of all immigrants regardless of their legal status.
I have sent this statement to all pastors and asked them to preach on this issue and to distribute the statement on the weekend of December 8th. This date is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patroness of the United States.
The Catholic Church is a Church of immigrants and has long been the friend of immigrants. The Church recognizes the importance of border security and does not propose illegal immigration. But the Church also understands that people migrate to feed their families and to improve their lives. While many public persons are reluctant at this time to speak on behalf of the immigrant, the Church raises a strong voice informed by the gospel calling for comprehensive immigration reform. The current broken system does nobody any good in this country.
I join the other Bishops in California in urging all to commit to the complex and demanding challenge of immigration reform.
May we always be a country that welcome strangers, tends to the needy and offers liberty and justice for all.

Declaración del Obispo Stephen Blaire Sobre una Reforma de Inmigración
Los Obispos Católicos de California hacen una declaración sobre la necesidad de una reforma migratoria y del cuidado pastoral de todos los inmigrantes sin tomar en cuenta su estado legal.
Yo he mandado esta declaración a todos los párrocos y les he pedido predicar sobre este tema y aun distribuir esta declaración el fin de semana del 8 de diciembre. Esta fecha indica la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María, la patrona de los Estados Unidos.
La Iglesia Católica es una Iglesia de inmigrantes y desde hace mucho ha sido la amiga de los inmigrantes. La Iglesia reconoce la importancia de la seguridad fronteriza y de ninguna manera propone inmigración ilegal. Del mismo modo, la Iglesia también comprende que la gente emigra para mantener a sus familias y para mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Mientras que muchas personas en puestos públicos se refrenan en este momento de hablar a favor del inmigrante, la Iglesia inspirada por el evangelio, levanta con voz fuerte, el llamado para una reforma comprensiva de inmigración. El sistema actual, quebrado, a nadie le hace ningún bien en este país.
Me uno a todos los Obispos de California en urgir a todos a comprometerse al reto complejo y demandante de una reforma de inmigración.
Que nosotros seamos siempre un país el cual da la bienvenida al forastero, atiende al necesitado, y ofrece libertad y justicia a todos.
