Statement by Bishop Stephen Blaire on the Papal Honors, Stockton September 20, 2007

Bishop Blaire announces, with great joy and pride, that “His Holiness Benedict XVI has honored 30 outstanding people in the Diocese of Stockton.” The Bishop worked with the pastors in the Diocese to identify outstanding Catholics deserving of these awards, which will be given out in the parishes.

Ten people are receiving the Pro Ecclesia ET Pontifice Cross for outstanding service within the Church and to the Community.

(The Holy Cross Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice is an award of the Roman Catholic Church, also known as the "Cross of Honour". The medal was established by Leo XIII on July 17 1888 to commemorate his golden sacerdotal jubilee and was originally bestowed on those women and men who had aided and promoted the jubilee. It is currently given for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity by the Papacy. On the medal is a cross made by fleurs-de-lis fixed in the angles of the cross. The medal's ribbon is made of Papal colors and is worn on the right side of breast. )
