Statement by Bishop Stephen Blaire on Illo Case

March 26, 2005

Statement by Bishop Stephen E. Blaire:

In regard to the verdict reached on Good Friday, March 25, 2005 in the Machado vs. Illo, Arakal, Ryan, Blaire and the Diocese of Stockton Case:

The diocese recognizes the verdict reached by the jury as a just and fair one. Vladimir Kozina represented the Diocese of Stockton, Father Joseph Illo, Monsignor Richard Ryan and Bishop Stephen Blaire. Mike Coughlan represented Father Francis Arakal.

The plaintiff's allegations were substantial, including sex abuse claims, battery claims, defamation claims and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims.

The jury decided in favor of all the defendants except for one claim of negligent infliction of emotional distress that occurred on September 11, 2001, and awarded the plaintiff's daughter $20,000. The situation on September 11, 2001 was a pressure filled one which created stress, and the parish staff immediately and fairly addressed the matter.
