| International
Candidates
The Diocese of Stockton does accept candidates
from foreign countries who express an interest in studying
for the priesthood for the Diocese.
The purpose of accepting international candidates
prior to acceptance by the Diocese of Stockton and admission
to a seminary is twofold. First, it is essential that candidates
from foreign countries possess a certain level of fluency
(conversational, written, and reading) in English. This is
important because the candidates will live and minister in
English-speaking communities. In addition, all United States
seminaries require that international candidates pass the
TOEFL exam. Second, in accepting candidates for seminary
studies, the Diocese of Stockton must be reasonably assured
that the candidates have at least the potential call for priestly
ministry in this local Church. The period of pre-seminary
preparation provides the Diocese and candidates the opportunity
to become acquainted and begin the discernment process for
diocesan priesthood.
Criteria for Acceptance of International Candidates
The criteria for the acceptance of a candidate
for seminary preparation includes, but are not limited to:
- Full initiation in the Roman Catholic Church:
Baptism, Confirmation, and celebration of the Eucharist
with the reception of Communion.
- The completion of some time in a seminary
formation program. This time can include either philosophy
or theology studies.
- The candidate’s ability to obtain and hold
the appropriate, valid United States visa.
