The Permanent Diaconate

The Permanent Diaconate is a third degree of the hierarchy of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, after bishop and priest. The deacon is ordained not to priesthood but for ministry and service. Deacons are ordained to assist the bishop and priests in the celebration of the divine mysteries, above all the Eucharist, in the distribution of Holy Communion, in assisting at and blessing  marriages, in the proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, in presiding over funerals, and in dedicating themselves to the various ministries of charity. In the West the permanent diaconate was reestablished by the Second Vatican Council. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1569-1571)

The deacons are ministers of charity and justice. They are dedicated to the building of a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of our modern world. Because deacons and their families live in their own communities and work in the world, they are uniquely positioned and deeply involved in promoting Catholic social teaching.
