Advisory Councils
In the Diocese of Stockton, all parishes with elementary
schools are required to have Advisory School Councils. These
councils exist to assist the pastor in guiding the administration
of the school. The Catholic Schools Office is available to
assist your community with orientation and training of new
council members, and to work the council in improving their
performance.
Research on Councils
The National Catholic Education Association has collected
extensive information regarding how successful councils operate.
The information has been published in two documents available
from the NCEA (www.ncea.org)
Building Better Boards: A Handbook for Board Members
of Catholic Education (1990)
by Lourdes Sheehan, RSM, Ed.D
Benchmarks of Excellence: Effective Boards of Catholic
Education (1997)
By John Convey, Provost, The Catholic University of America
Regina M. Haney, Executive Director, National Association
of Boards of Catholic Education
The research indicates that effective councils focus their
work in the areas of:
Strategic Planning, Finance, Development, Marketing, Plant,
and Policy. Councils also usually have Executive and Nomination
standing committees. Resources
