Resources
People live in a media society. A video may
assist in more clearly communicating the message than a lecture
presentation. It engages the participant on level that other
adult learning styles do not. However, for maximum benefit
it is essential to use the video properly. Here are some do’s
and don’ts.
Do
- Preview the video. Also, read the discussion
guide so that you are familiar with it.
- You may need to preview several videos to
determine which is the most appropriate for your topic.
- Copy the discussion questions and the suggested
activities for your participants. You may develop your own
discussion materials.
- Reserve a VCR/monitor that has a screen large
enough that your audience will be able to see the video.
Arrange the room so that all participants can see the screen.
- Practice using the VCR/monitor. Not all machines
are the same.
- Schedule enough time so that the reflection
questions can be used in preparation for preview and after
the video.
- Determine how you will use the video. You
may want to stop the video at appropriate places for discussion.
Some videos are designed in sections so that you can stop
for discussion before moving to the next segment. Some videos
are long and you may want to divide the showing of the video
over two or three classes.
Don’t
- Don’t use a video you have not previewed.
- Don’t use a video without preparing
your audience for it.
- Don’t use a video because you have
not had time to prepare a topic for a class.
